Commissioned Project, Untamed Cat Treats.

There’s a whole world of modern, premium, direct-to-consumer start-ups operating online these days. And they can make for surprisingly interesting clients for product photographers. Since working with Noun For Pets in the summer of ‘23, I’ve been on the lookout for more pet-related brands to work with to keep increasing the range of product types I can show to have worked with effectively. Enter: Untamed. A premium cat food brand delivering tailored nutrition for cats across the UK. And lucky for me, Untamed cat treats were due to relaunch.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Initial chats with the lovely people at Untamed told me that they had struggled to find consistent, cost-effective and high-quality brand photography. In identifying these factors, I made setting the goals I needed to hit for this new client very easy. These are all my selling points for Studio G! Predictably, taking time to draw a complete brief from my clients and list objectives for my content to hit continues to pay dividends. These small pointers help develop my processes and keep each project looking fresh and unique. Subsequently, the versatile content produced performs better and longer for my clients. Win-win!

Amidst discussions of larger projects with feline models and countless new product launches on the horizon, we tested the water with an initial project focusing on their soon to be re-launched cat treat products. Utilising my popular Start-up Package template, I shot two variations of these well-designed pouches in consistent styles with similarly vibrant and on-brand colours. Following this, an incredibly positive response to our first project immediately led to the confirmation of a second project with a new product focus, so keep an eye out for more uploads in the future with other cat treat products!

A problem to solve for our potential future collaborations: Working with cats as models. I’ve worked with dogs before, who are conveniently reward-driven, but I’m told this is not the case with cats. So, what I’ve decided will be my first attempt at tackling this challenge is to take a wildlife photography approach. Set a trap (in this case, the trap is a ‘set’). Then put some distance between myself and it and patiently wait for the focus to enter the scene and utilise a longer focal length lens. Either that, or lean on Photoshop’s AI-powered ‘Generative Fill’ function.

As always, my top tier printed vinyl backdrops come from Club Backdrops. Use that link to get your first backdrop free!
